Natural Bathing & Grooming: Mommy bathes me in a very gentle Hogwash for Body & Prickle that includes a soft Muslin Oatmeal Soak. She even paints a hedgehog on the reusable muslin bag! She softens and nourishes my cute little ears by rubbing Maxwell & Friends Hedgie Soft Lanolin Blend onto them. She moisturizes my feet with Maxwell & Friends Tootsie Moisturizer made just for me and my friends (yes, she talks to me like a baby and calls my feet and hands tootsies, embarrassing). She brushes Maxwell & Friends Vitamin E Prickle Blend into my quills (she calls them prickles) with a toothbrush or she pets it onto me if I am in a good mood. Because of the African Pygmy Hedgehog safe ingredients, with advice from a holistic veterinarian, I have never had to worry about the typical hedgie dry skin, or the mites that we can get.
A Hedgie Tip About APH Nail Growth: I just want to mention my nail growth for my APH friends. Mommy trims my nails once a month with infant nail clippers (with a monkey on them, no less, but I've gotten used to humiliation). If she doesn't trim them, my nails will curl under and poke into the soles of my "tootsies" (ugh) if they get too long and I hear that is very painful. I don't dig for insects like my wild counterparts do, which does help them to grind down their nails. She keeps some cornstarch on hand in case she trims too short. For my first nail trimming she had to use it since the whole APH thing was so new to her. Happily, I have not seen the cornstarch ever again but she always tells me it's next to me there in the "Maxwell Kit".
A Tip About Hedgie Bathing: First, please don't ever leave your APH alone in the water. Secondly, I can't bathe myself. In the wild my counterparts roll in dust or dirt, and find water, so they keep somewhat clean. But us APHs are not like other animals that lick or are able to groom themselves, so I have to be bathed. Please make sure the water for your APH is just right. I know that you don't want us to get chilled but we can't withstand water that is too warm and we can easily get burned. Do some research on this please. My mommy dips her elbow into the water and if it feels any more than slightly warm she holds off on putting me in until she gets it right. She used a thermometer for a while but now she says something like that she "has it down". But it's weird because her elbow is never all the way down.
One of the Best Things about My Bathing Experience: Aside from playing in the water and the fun of the bath itself with my ducks, sharks and a turtle, my mommy warms my hooded towel in the dryer while she bathes me. She lets it cool a little so it's not too hot. As soon as my bath is over, she wraps me in the hooded towel (I fit right in the hood with room to spare!) and it's so warm! At the same time she warms a blanket, so once I'm dried I go into the warm blanket. This is when she uses a baby brush (ladybug style, no less, and I'm a guy) to brush the Maxwell & Friends Vitamin E Prickle Blend into my prickles. She also rubs my tummy and I love it!
Please also take a look at the Maxwell & Friends natural products For Home & Wheel. My environment is clean and calming because of special essential oils for me, so I am happy and healthy, but one actually keeps my feet moisturized and much cleaner while I exercise on my wheel! Isn't that cool?
